Celebration of Karam – a Festival of Harvest

On September 29, 2018, Sisters from Tanmaya and ICJ community (Inter Congregational Juniorate) celebrated the Karam Festival. Karam is a harvest festival which marks the celebration of nature and fertility. It’s a sacred festival, celebrated by the tribal people of Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Assam and Odisha.
The central attraction of this festival is the Karam Tree. For Christians this tree symbolises the Cross, by which Christ redeemed humanity. As the sisters gathered around the Karam branch, they offered thanks to God, the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe and implored God’s abundant blessings on all. Through the enactment of the Karam story the sisters spread the message of honesty, simplicity, unity and love of nature.
The atmosphere was filled with joy, fun and laughter as both the young and old joined in the tribal dance around the Karam Tree.
