Celebrating Cultures, Cherishing Heritage: A Journey of Unity and Togetherness

“God saw everything that He had made, and indeed, it was very good.” — Genesis 1:31 Our world is blessed with a beautiful diversity of cultures, traditions, languages and ways of life. Every culture carries its own history, values, beauty and wisdom. The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, observed every year on 9 August, reminds us to recognize and celebrate the rich cultural heritage, identities, rights and contributions of Indigenous Peoples. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this observance in 1994, inspired by the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982. The UN continues to encourage greater awareness, respect for Indigenous rights and recognition of their valuable knowledge, traditions and relationship with nature.
In this spirit of appreciation and togetherness, our celebrations of Tribal Day and Onam in different communities became beautiful expressions of cultural diversity and unity. Through music, dance, traditional art forms and fellowship, these celebrations brought people together, strengthened cultural identity and reminded us that, despite our differences, we belong to one human family.

Ratlam (M.P.) – Celebrating Tribal Culture

Our community at Ratlam celebrated Adiwasi Diwas with great joy, enthusiasm and togetherness. The simple yet vibrant evening was filled with recreation, laughter, music and fellowship. Everyone participated wholeheartedly, making the community come alive with love and respect for one another’s culture. The celebration helped us appreciate the beautiful virtues reflected in tribal life—simplicity, humility, unity, togetherness, love and care for nature. It reminded us that diversity does not divide us; rather, it enriches our common life. Though we may belong to different cultures, traditions and languages, we are one. The celebration also inspired us to value and protect Mother Earth, recognizing the deep respect for nature found in tribal ways of life. At the end of the celebration, our hearts were filled with enthusiasm, love and respect for the gift of diverse cultures. It was truly a joyful, meaningful and memorable time of togetherness and friendship.

Antervelia (M.P.) – Celebrating Tribal Heritage

What a marvelous Creator we have! With great love, God created the earth and everything in it. The beauty of creation reminds us that every person, every culture and every tribe is a precious part of God’s wonderful design. Tribal Day is a special occasion to appreciate and celebrate the richness of cultural heritage. It invites us to remember our roots, value our traditions and thank God for the gift of our cultural identity. Our culture is not simply a part of our history; it is a living treasure that gives colour and meaning to our identity. We are privileged to live and serve in the beautiful land of Jhabua, surrounded by the rich and vibrant Bhil culture. As part of our mission among the Bhil community, our school celebrated Tribal Day on 8 August 2026 with great joy, enthusiasm and gratitude. The celebration became a journey into our roots, giving our students an opportunity to learn about their tribe, understand their traditions and appreciate their cultural heritage. The colours, rhythms and melodies of tribal life came alive through songs and dances. Each child presented something unique with creativity and enthusiasm. The cultural dances became bridges connecting the present generation with its roots. They reminded us that our roots give us strength, just as the roots of a tree give it strength to stand tall. The celebration also reminded us of our responsibility towards Mother Earth. Indigenous communities possess valuable knowledge and traditions connected with their lands and natural environment. The day invited us to look back with gratitude, live in the present with joy and carry our cultural heritage into the future with pride. Our cultures may be different, but together they form one beautiful human family in God’s creation.

Onam – Celebrating Kerala’s Cultural Heritage

Onam is a celebration of harmony, equality, togetherness and the rich cultural heritage of Kerala. The festival brings people together and strengthens the bonds of love, friendship and happiness. Keeping alive this beautiful spirit of Onam, St. Joseph’s Convent Senior Secondary School, Pulluvazhy, organized an Onam Flash Mob on 21 August at Kuruppumpady, Valayanchirangara and Pulluvazhy during the evening. Fifty-six enthusiastic children transformed public spaces into colourful stages of Kerala’s traditional culture. The performance beautifully blended tradition, folklore, music and dance. The story of Mahabali set the culturaltone, reminding the audience of the values of equality, justice and compassion associated with his reign. The energetic Pulikali added colour and excitement, while Vanchippattu brought alive the spirit of Kerala’s famous boat-race traditions. The children also presented traditional characters and art forms such as Kummatti, Onapottan, Thiruvathirakali and Kavadi. Each presentation reflected the beauty and diversity of Kerala’s cultural roots and showed how traditional art forms can continue to inspire younger generations. The flash mob carried a message beyond celebration. Through their performance, the children raised their voices against drug abuse and encouraged everyone to celebrate Onam in a safe, healthy and drug-free manner. The message was simple yet powerful: let our celebrations be filled with music, friendship, culture and happiness—not drugs.
The programme received wide participation and appreciation from the public. People gathered enthusiastically to witness the cultural presentation. The sight of children performing traditional art forms in public spaces created an atmosphere of joy and pride, while the social message added greater meaning to the celebration. The Onam Flash Mob was therefore much more than a cultural performance. It became a celebration of Kerala’s roots, a reminder of our shared heritage and a call for a healthier society. The vibrant event also received media coverage, helping to carry its message to a wider audience.

Celebrating Diversity, Building Unity

Whether through the tribal traditions of Ratlam and Antervelia or the vibrant cultural heritage of Kerala, these celebrations remind us of the beauty found in diversity. They teach us to value our roots, respect one another’s traditions and pass our cultural heritage on to future generations. Like many flowers in one garden, each culture has its own colour and fragrance. When these colours come together, they create a beautiful picture of God’s love, creativity, unity and harmony. Let us continue to celebrate our differences, cherish our heritage and build communities where culture becomes a bridge that brings hearts together.
